Tools

This set of tools will perform all the initial filing and piercing exercises.


Basic student's toolkit

- suits part-time courses

  • Saw frame & 2/0 blades

  • Hand files in Cut 2, flat, half round, three square

  • Dividers, 76mm

  • Pin vice, and a packet of good quality steel darning needles

  • 150mm thin steel rule

  • Small engineer's set square

  • Buff sticks and emery paper

  • Cross-peen jeweller's hammer

  • Tinsmith's shears

  • Centre punch

  • Bench brush

  • Lemel scoop (may be made from small plastic container)


Intermediate/Advanced students toolkit

- suits full-time courses in addition to basic toolkit

Pliers

  • Flat nose

  • Snipe or chain nose flats

  • Round nose

  • Half round

  • Parallel pliers, with snipe and flats

Hammers

  • Hide or plastic mallet

Needle Files

  • Barrette file (donkey back)

  • Equalling file (flat)

  • Round file (rat tail)

  • Square file (four square)

  • Triangular file (three square)

  • Half round file

students should have

  • one Cut 0 and

  • one Cut 2 grade in each shape

Others

  • One set of fine engineer's drills. (0.5mm to 1.5mm)

  • File card for cleaning files

  • Binding wire

  • Borax brush

  • Cool tongs in stainless steel

  • Fine stainless steel tweezers

  • Ring mandrel or triblets

  • Vernier gauge in 1/10 mm
